What's in it for you?
The Urban Academy offers a range of courses and
workshops including basic skills such as literacy and numeracy, as well
as life skills and creative art-based skills. Some programmes are specially
designed around individual learners. One to one support is also available.
Sessions are delivered in small discussion-based and interactive
groups which take into consideration levels of literacy and numeracy.
Sessions are planned to allow young people to be able to engage
and succeed every time.
A certificate is awarded for each course or workshop completed.
Course content takes into consideration experiences and skills
already gained from inner city environments.
Attendance is initially for as long as can be tolerated within
a day and can be gradually increased.
Educational and personal support is provided by key workers, learning
mentors and other professionals.

What Marvyn says

"I was the first student at the Urban Academy. I study fashion, and
take part in the 'Keep It Real' course - which looks to find new ways
to teach students who have not managed to learn through the conventional
schools and colleges. The course taught us to open our minds and learn
at our own pace. The place lets me express my creative side in a safe,
loving and caring environment. I visit Jenny once a week for massage which
helps me to relax. I also visit our oesteopath once a week for my back.
My key worker, David, helps me with my course work and I'm able to talk
to him about everything - especially things that are bothering me. If
the Urban Academy didn't exist I would be lost. I would still be finding
ways to express and channel myself."
